For volume loss
Strong evidenceA 2025 systematic review of 20 clinical studies found PLLA effective and well tolerated for facial volumization and collagen stimulation, with high patient satisfaction and results commonly lasting about 2 years. The deepest data comes from HIV-related facial lipoatrophy, where four prospective studies (VEGA, Chelsea and Westminster, APEX002, Blue Pacific, totaling 278 patients) showed significant, durable increases in dermal thickness sustained at least 18 months. FDA approved for HIV facial lipoatrophy (2004), facial wrinkles and folds (2009), and cheek volume.
Multiple randomized controlled trials or a meta-analysis support this use. The effect is real and repeatable.
